Hi all I recently picked up my replacement bike from halfords and have ridden it today for the first time. It's a 13 alpha with the carbon frame on the way home I noticed it's got quiet a bad creaking/cracking noise from somewhere on the bike when pedaling it's not there when freewheeling I stopped about 5 times trying to source it but no luck. It's my first carbon bike do the creak?

Could literally be anything, based on your current info. BB, QRs, stem, bars, you need to narrow it down a bit...

That's the issue I'm struggling to pin point where it's coming from. I'd say it did it more when I put more power down. The one thing I have found is possible metal fragment in the BB area.

You've had the BB apart already? If the creaking is significant (sounds like it might be) then just take the bike back. If the bike is BB30, then it's quite possible it could be that. Whether Halfords will know how to remedy it is another matter.

No I stopped to check out noise and it was half out the bb. Trying to avoid taking bike back as this one is an upgraded replacement for one they messed up and damaged

It will more than likely be the bb30 as a lot of halfords staff r not trained to maintain them. The advise is normally to remove them and grease them on a pdi before they r sold

Can you post pics of the BB area and said metal fragment? Carbon frames transmit noises in a way that makes it hard to identify the source.

Unfortunatly I lost the piece before I could get a photo. Spoke to halfords mechanic today and he said something like 1/10 Of the bearings fail so gonna put a new bb in when he back from holiday

if they're getting 10% bearing failure there's a major problem somewhere!
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Probably cos they are mass produced as cheaply as possible with poor quality material. Think when the new set die I'll invest on better quality bearings

It's not a cheap product if 10% fail and have to be replaced. You'd bin that supplier very quickly.

Don't think I believe the stats here.

Never had a problem with BB30 after thousands and thousands of miles. Regrease every now and again and then new bearings when it feels a bit notchy or after a winter of riding.

But as mentioned above I bet if you took the cranks off its dry as a bone in there.

Ensure front skewers / dropouts are greased.

I nearly got to replacing a whole BB30 system after days of exasperation with a clicking brand new bike before realising the clicking noise which was 110% coming from the BB30 was actually dry-as-a-bone front dropouts which a dab of grease cured instantly.

In my case, the bike shop ticked the pdi box for "Skewers / dropouts greased" yes hadn't actually done it, causing me heartache and multiple trips back!

I often tell this tale to mechanics I meet and they all concur that it's a Common problem, often missed.

What do you mean by skewers and dropouts sorry I'm new to cycling still getting used to the terms

Skewers are the quick release mechanism that is through the middle of the wheel, and the drop out is where it sits in the bike fork, or the cut out section you fit the wheel into

Ah ok makes sense how much grease should be there roughly?

Never greased these in all my years of cycling.

never greased them here either...or had any noise for that matter.

Had plenty of failed BB30 bearigs.....none of those creaked either, just a click per rev normally

Usual suspects to check are saddle/deatpost....pedals, and one that always happens on giants is the tiny allen bolts that hold the rear mech hangar come loose and creak like a bitch

Yip. Totally agree. Grease the dropouts and make sure the skewers are tight.
