Hello, and Help!!!!

I'm brand spankin new to the forum. I am an avid mountain bike rider as I live in the big south fork national park, and my riding partner is moving to Colorado for 9 months to finish school. Thought I would try road cycling for these next 9 months to see how it flows for me. I usually do 15 to 20 miles per ride in the woods. Can you guys steer me into a low cost but good bike that might help me in this time of need without busting the bank? I'm thinking under a grand or even half that just to have something to ride that might help me decide if I am to upgrade and go full in. Huge thanks guys. I need to buy this weekend.

    If you're already a mountain biker then maybe you know of a good local bike store and can go in there and ask for some advice?
