Chain bouncing off

I have always run 2x10 setups on my roadbike and commuter until Wednesday night; I had just fitted a new lefthand/front shifter on the flat bar commuter, lovely shifting (grip shifter picked up cheap on the bay to see what they are like); went to tighten up the bolt which nips the front gear shift cable and the bolt just dethreaded the dérailleur with virtually no torque. So I decided to just pop the front dérailleur off and ride with a 1x10 set up till I could get replacement.

Well I have a big range at back and was quite happy (no hills that even made me go to granny gear) without inner ring BUT a few times when I snatched at gears (sudden change back up when lights went green whilst still rolling towards them etc) the chain just pops off the chain ring. Now this has never happened with the front dérailleur in place but happened 3 times so far. Obviously the front dérailleur cage was holding the chain in position at these points and that is no longer happening - but what can I do to stop this happening? Tighter chain is about the only thing I can think of - so thought I would ask before I start tinkering

leave the front mech on but adjust the limit screws to place it either side of the chain when it's on the chainring - will stop it falling off then

Thanks. That's a nice idea that I will implement if I cannot sort it in another way - the only downside is that it is nice not to have the front dérailleur as the bike looks better with cleaner lines and less places for the mud to gather

Is this not the purpose of a chain keeper/catcher? (stop the chain bouncing off)

Edit - I do of course mean chain guide

Hmm - another piece of kit! Might try that - although as I am riding a road set up with a 53 at the front gonna have to find a different size version (that one is for up to 44 teeth)

used to have a single ring setup cyclocross bike and the chain would bounce of sometimes, front mech as above sorted it.

another option would be a single ring specific chainring which has deeper teeth and is not designed to change gear

Yeah - narrow-wide chain rings; just been reading up on them.

I think this is the preferred solution at the moment - I'll put away the nice double rings (that are pretty new) and try a CX1 setup

My commuter has always run 1x, even on a single specific ring I needed a chain guide (started with an old Sora front mech I dremelliumed to make it a neater chain guide).

Just about to rebuild the bike with a CX chainset and narrow wide ring, been using narrow wide on the MTB for a while with no issues.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

"dremelliumed" - chapeau for that word alone.

Luckily I was able to dig the old dérailleur out of the bin - so will be able to follow that advice. Am also going to pick up a single specific ring / narrow-wide when I can see one for a song on 'bay

Thanks, but I read it online......

I cut off the actuation lever and shaped the cut tip, removed the return spring and washers and just used the assembly bolts to hold it in one position, got it down to 98g and very minimalist looking, I did consider cutting the cage down but figured it would go rusty so didn't.
