Hello!

I am am writing to ask about cassette wear.
I just installed a new cassette and after 200miles I already spotted on one of the cogs the marks left by the side of the chain.

The rear mech seems to be tuned fine, it runs smoothly with no noise and no jumps. I always lube everything, I recently tried ceramic wax lube.

Do you have any tip n trick I can try? Is the main issue the rear mech tuning?
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Cant believe a cassette could wear in 200 miles.

Google a new cassette pic - does it look the same ?

    Hi,
is not the teeth to be worn, is just the chain running too close to the next sprocket, rubbing against it and leaving marks.
Added link to the picture in my original post, hope you can see that.

I tried to adjust the rear mech but is hard to get it right since everything seems to run smoothly and you only end up noticing once you take the wheel off.
From eye and hearing inspection everything seems fine, was asking if there is any specific trick that could help me to get it right...

What Brand of cassette is it? Looks like the protective grease on the cogs is still there and the chain is marking this. I'd take it off, clean and degrease it. Give it a spray of GT85, reinstall it and lube chain again. See what happens after another 200 miles.

Can't see anything wrong with that. Just carry on riding.

    is SRAM 10 speed.
The marks you see are not just on the lube layer, but they are on the metal itself.

its the wax that youve put on the chain. If that wasnt on there you'd probably not see the imprint.

That said - are you sure you have the right width of chain for your set up ?

    all the specs are met.
10 speeds all the way, cassette, chain, shifters, all SRAM force.
No wax on the cassette, has been cleand and lubed afterwards as usual. Marks are on the metal

If everything is running smoothly with no noise, as you say, then there is nothing wrong with it. Marks on the cassette are an inevitable consequence of contact with the chain, which is itself an inevitable consequence of pedalling the bike. So just go and do more of it and stop worrying.

    Cool!
I haven't gone through many cassettes yet in my life, so I was wondering if this kind of wear is somehow normal or due infact to some tuning issue...

    Thanks

TBH I have never seen that kind of marking on a cassette, but all my stuff is 9 and 10 speed Shimano. Maybe the SRAM stuff is made to sloppier tolerances...

If it's just the ends of the pins contacting the outer face of the biggest sprocket, I can't see either chain or cassette suffering.

Is it an XG1090? They are expensive! £165 from Wiggle. Wouldn't want to wear that out in a hurry! I'd get a second opinion from a trusted bike shop to make sure everything is running true. Those chain rubs on the big sprocket don't look right to me. They are too round and not 'smeared' enough, almost like something has pushed them into the the face of the sprocket. If it was rubbing you'd expect more of a smear than an impression like that?

If the mech is 'running smoothly with no noise' (as the OP stated) then there is no problem. If there was a problem, it wouldn't run smoothly and there would be noise.

my SRAM cassettes do this and they have all well over 10,000km on them without any issues. nothing to worry about, just keep riding.
