You tell us? Nobody can advise you what gearing you should be using without knowing anything about you, your fitness or the type of riding you do.

This, if your riding bridleways and thus going up steep stuff, a 38t let alone a 42t chain ring will make for hard work even if your a sub 60kg racing snake!

On the other hand if your riding at speed on flatter stuff a 32t would top out much sooner.

It would be less limiting with a wider range cassette?

Once I was doing BearBones200 in Wales with cyclocross gearing 36 front/28 rear - had to be out of saddle mostly all the time, gearing is way too high. Then tried 1x with 38 front ant 34 rear - much better. Now switched to 42 front 40 rear for more versatility.

42/32 is a nice ratio. Tidy for climbing (and mud) with enough zip for club rides on suitable tyres.

Mid 30inch gearing is getting towards the stiffer side for road climbing, throw in lumpy surface and mud, and it's going to feel very stiff on anything approaching a steep off road climb.

Going back really it rather depends on what the OP is doing.

Though it's the same gear as 11-28 with a 36/46.
