Hi all,
Heading down into the area of Saint Jean De Maurienne after the etape, and just wondering about the condition/popularity of cyclists on this replacement road round the south side of Lac du Chambon. The Marmotte was this last weekend, and I understand went down it- is the Lautaret now essentially open for cyclists, or is this temporary road a bit sketchy and best avoiding?
Thanks

I cycled that section a number of times at the start of June and it was fine, we were staying in Le Grave a few miles further up the Lautaret.
There was a traffic light on a short section where traffic can't pass in opposite directions, and the sensor didn't seem to pick up bikes, so twice after a long wait we just went through the red light.
Some of the short uphills on that road are a bit testing on the legs after a long day of climbing.0 -
The road is fine, nice smooth tarmac. There's a button on the lights for cyclists to press so it knows you're there.
As the service road doesn't seem to be advertised as open, the traffic seems a lot lighter than when the tunnel was open.0 -
I rode on it at the weekend.
Yep, the tarmac is the usual Gallic quality, nice and smooth with very few joints. The alignment of the road itself is a little tortuous, it's quite narrow and there's a lot of concrete barriers on the edges. But fine really, no reason at all to avoid it.0 -
Super, thanks!0
