Does a longer cage rear mech give a quieter drivetrain?

My set-up is Ultegra 50x34 with 12-27 10 speed cassette. All is quiet in the 34 ring but in the 50 ring it is only quiet(ish) in the 17-12 rear sprockets. When in the 19 & larger the transmission is noisy & seems to be coming from the jockey wheels. The rear mech is an SS short cage & is fairly new. I've got the chain as long as possible without it sagging in the 34x12. The chain is not dangerously tight in the 50x27 (obviously never use this combo). Just wondering if a long cage GS mech would be quieter as it would allow a longer chain to be used & so less bend at the jockey wheels & so quieten things down.
Any thoughts?

  • I wouldn't expect it to make any difference. The noise you describe is almost cetainly because of the chain line - to run from the 50 to the inboard side of the cassette, it has to bend fairly acutely, which would be exactly the same with a longer cage/chain.
