Hi. I am looking to get a bike on the cycle to work scheme. After looking around I have decided on a cyclocross.

I have never ridden professionally and dont plan to, I used to ride casually about 4 years ago and enjoyed it, obv! I am after a bike that will do well on different terrain as I would like to think it will be used in woods, off track, on the road and on grass.

I can go up to £1000 but realistically am looking to spend closer to £600.

The part I am finding most difficult is deciding what bike is best for that kind of money, there are so many out there. Surely they all do pretty much the same thing, just look different?

Two that seem to be good 'all rounders' are the Claud Butler Alto CX9. And the Boardman CX Comp.
Are these good? Are there better ones out there?
As you can see, I am at a bit of a loss.

I figured I would post on this forum as you guys as pros are likely to have some good advice :)

Thanks
Edd

I've gone through Cycle to Work scheme and I can say it's another sh*t way to fool people... First of all you get a bike for the full RRP, when other shops already sell them at least £200 cheaper, then you kind of save a little bit through taxation, but the bike you got is already half cheaper in any shop after half a year... plus you have to pay another £50~£60 on top at the end of program. The best way to buy cheap is look for sales after cycling season (end of summer, autumn, sometimes even spring), cycle to work is just a way to finance bike if you don't have whole sum to pay.

Sounds like you need to pay a visit to a local (preferably independent) bike shop and get some advice.
Failing that you really can't go wrong with the Boardman CX range at Halfords, great value for money although their after sales and mechanical skills is sometimes questionable.

    Okay. Thanks for your replies.

I have popped down my nearest shop (specialising in GIANT bikes) I am a bit apprehensive about buying from mainstream shops (Basically Halfords) as I always feel i'm getting ripped off.

After looking more in depth I may very well buy outright as I have the money to do so, I feel I will get a better deal and am not tied into any long term financial commitment.

Two main ones I am now looking at...

Is buying second hand worth it? Will these bikes give me value for money?
    Thanks

I'm loving my first road bike. A specialized diverge . 1200 quid. My friend call it "the stealth Bike", it's great to ride, gets lots of admiring comments, just needs a more svelte rider now, LOL

Giants all have nice development on frames, but horrible wheels and all other parts are uber heavy :)
