Strange HRM readings

Been having a problem with my HRM, some days it'll work fine others it'll drop out and others it will give really low/strange readings. Thought it just needed a new battery, so changed it but it's made no difference.

When I first put it on it gives normal readings, but then as soon as I the effort ramps up the readings plummet.

Strap is only about 6 months old and in very good condition, HRM unit is approx 20 months old and I've just replaced battery - any ideas?

    Has the strap been washed according to instructions? (looking good is no guide - I've had a cosmetically perfect strap be useless for HRM and my current one looks like it's been in a fire fight in Baghdad yet still works perfectly).

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007XCLU66 works with the press-stud fit Garmin HRM - simply snap it off the strap it is currently on and on to the Polar strap.

    Otherwise - the strap needs to have good contact (doesn't need to be restrictive) - potentially a (very) hairy chest can confound it too.

    That's the strap I'm using.

    Hairy chest isn't a problem.

    Tbh, it only ever receives a rinse under a tap every now and again so I'll give it a proper wash and see what happens. Might dig out my old strap and try that, it's looked on it's last legs but was working fine.

    I've had some problems too with garmin/cycleops. What I found helps was 1. make sure the contacts are moistened 2. make sure the strap is tight 3. make sure it in the right chest position 4. make sure batteries are charged. If the event of partial failure try it against another computer or better USB Ant+ stick....if this works delete it from your current computer and reinstal from scratch.
