New Tyres Advice

Hi,

I've got a MTB that I use more for road/light trails so I'm wanting to get some tyres that are more suitable for this than what it has on now. The wheels say that they are 26" 559x19C Mavic Crossride Disc and I currently have some 26*1.75 Schwalbe Land Cruiser on them. Does anyone know what the thinnest/fastest tyre size I could use on these wheels, and any recommendations on what would be good for light trails and road riding to help me go a bit faster?

Thanks

You could go down to a 1" tyre on those rims if it suited your needs.

Kenda Small block eight are a good compromise between road and light trail, they are OK in slimey mud but don't cope at all well with thicker mud.

For thicker mud capability have a look at the Schwalbe Smart Sam which has a continuous centre bead for fast rolling on solid surfaces.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Thank you, I'm not too bothered about thick mud as won't be using this bike for those types of rides, this will purely be commuting and longer road based rides.

I've also been told to look at the Schwalbe Marathon (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/schwalbe-marath ... -city-tyre) which to be honest looks a bit more like what I'm after. They do these in a 1.5" which I'm hoping gives me less resistance to what I have now but still gives enough grip for the light trails.

Those are stupidly heavy. I've got 2.4 DH tyres that weigh less than the 2.0. My average XC tyres are around half the weight.

  • To be honest land cruisers are a pretty good budget tyre for that kind of use - any change in tyres is not going to be a revelation in speed.
  • Thanks for all the advice, I've got the Land Cruisers on at the moment but think they are fairly slow in terms of rolling resistance. I think after all this research I'm going to go for the Marathon Cross (http://www.schwalbe.com/gb/tour-reader/ ... cross.html) which seem to be a faster, lighter, all round tyre for what I need.

If anyone has any opinions or experience of them that would be helpful.

    Thanks!
