Raleigh sprint freewheel and chainset sprockets

Hi gents.
I've got a Raleigh sprint that I'm just starting to use but being a bit of a weakling, I would like a 34 sprocket on the freewheel (it's now 26) and a 34 ring on the small chainset (think it's 40 now) and it's a Sugino gt chainset.
I had this setup on my Boardman Race but that's gone now but I liked it.
Don't want to make a mistake buying the small chainset ring so Is it just a standard kind of ring please and can I get a freewheel with a 34 for the wheel.
Would it work or will the derailleur not be able to cope? It coped (just) on the Boardman and I took a link out of the chain.
