Strava Live Segments

A few months back I replaced my Garmin 500 with a Garmin 520 and started to use the Live Segments function. I've found this very useful and motivational (I set my target to try and beat my own PB). The function has worked well in the UK with no problems.

I'm now in France for around 7 weeks and have started to use it over here with less than great results. On quite a few of my selected segments the Live Segments screen has dropped out partway through the segment and reverted to my usual data screen. I thought this was probably due to bad satellite drift but when I've uploaded the ride to Strava the problem segments have registered just fine. I've zoomed into them to see if the satellite tracking had gone off track but they hadn't. In fact the tracking was pretty much accurate to the road.

I queried this with Strava Support who tell me that it's all to do with the fact that the Live Tracking feature is based Garmin Segments which allow very little (no?) deviation compared to Strava Segments which have built in drift as part of their algorithm.

A bit of a shame really. Anyone else come across this?

Yes, I'm glad someone else mentioned it as I thought it was just me. It tends to happen on longer segments with curvy sections - eg. Box Hill and the zig zags. Shorter or straighter segments it works just fine. Have you queried it with Garmin? I'll probably send them an email as it is annoying, and it's good to know where the problem lies now.

You're right, longer segments ... It happened to me again twice today. First one was a 1.7 mile twisty climb, the second was another twisty climb of 1.2 miles. Both dropped out about 2/3 of the way up the climbs.
When I got back and uploaded to Strava both climb segments had recorded fine and zooming in showed very little deviation.
I haven't queried it with Garmin. If you are going to it would be good to hear back on any feedback they give you.

ive also had issues on segments with switchbacks, been ok on straighter ones though. Having said that, I prefer starting a new lap and using lap average speed to pace rather than their screen. its useful to get the time readout at the end of the segment though.
