Starter Bike

I'm a mountain biker and my mate has started Road riding so i'm looking at a bike to start going out with him and doing a few events too.
Been doing a lot of reading on which starter bike is best. I've seen a few Giant Defy 3 on ebay and I like them. Also quite a few discounted bikes on Pauls/tredz etc.
My budget is around £250 second hand and if I'm going on finance I think about £20PCM I reckon.
Also been offered a Triban 500SE for £160
I like these too...

Any advice would be welcome.

If the Triban fits you and is in half decent nick, that's the best bang per buck by a mile. Well reviewed, as above link shows.
You'll then have some money for all the other stuff you don't think you'll need but invariably do. Roadie kit for one; those baggies will be slowing you down no end!0
