New old wheels, should I be worried about this marked freehub?

Hi guys,

just took delivery of a second hand (sub 1000 mile) set of cycleclinic carbon disc wheels, which were built at the end of 2015.

The freehub is fairly marked, is this anything to worry about........?

I bought a pair of wheels from Rose that did a similar thing, and made a horrible noise, they are sat in the garage at the moment gathering dust, just hoping this will not affect these wheels.
Won't be able to test them for at least 3 weeks, as am going away.

Would appreciate your input, and presumably if it does need a new freehub, I would imagine that would not be too expensive........?

Wouldn't worry at all, all alloy freehubs do this. Consistent with mileage IMO.

Nice one, thanks chaps - just wanted a second opinion.

Think most of the cassettes I have changed have been on super cheap R500 types of wheels, which probably don't have aluminium hubs, hence the lack of marking on them - puts my mind at rest!

    Cheers

Once you stick a cassette on it you won't even see it so chill...

...mind you, the marking will always be there and you will always remember it...

LOL, I don't give a monkeys about the marking, it wa s more if it was going to cause squeaking or some weird noise when under load, now I know it is purely cosmetic, it ceases to be of any concern :D
I can focus fully on my holiday now, and getting bikes packed!

Oh no, they're scrap. To help you out I'll give you a tenner for them.
Is that a Novatec hub? They do that, I know mine have. It can make it a bit harder to get the cassette off as you have to free it off of the indentations, but no problems in use.

    :D

    This is the spec:
    38mm full carbon rims
    CX-Ray spokes (24F/24R)
Novatec D771/772 hubs (QR or 15/12mm thru axle with included adapters)
    1545g

Bought as summer wheels for my winter bike - it made sense at the time.

If it bothers you BDOP offer replacement freehubs specified as Anti-bite Guard (ABG). They are supposed to be much less prone to marking and gouging from cassettes

All alu freehubs look like this after the first ride or two - nothing to worry about at all. They seem to anodise them pretty colours to make it stand out as much as possible! :)

Only troublw ive ever had is geting the casette off but a gentle wiggle between each gear with a screwdriver frees them off. I always ride reynolds wheels and they do the same i just put it down to the huge ammounts of watts ;-)
