Bike storage!

Maybe there isn't a perfect answer to this, but how to people store their bikes to save space?
I mean I have 3 road bikes, a MTB and a pub bike. The kids have another 2 (soon to be 3)
I have a garage and I have one.of those storage units for 4 bikes (two bikes high).. but I'm not convinced it's a great use of space.
I have throught about wheel mounted bike hangers. Ceiling mounted pulley systems, all being a bit of homemade solutions..
Anyone found a good solution apart from hanging them on the.livibg room walls?
