SPD SL Cleats

Howdy!

Currently riding with Shimano SPD double sided cleats. Finding them really uncomfortable on longer rides so thinking of upgrading to the SPD-SL.

Is there any real difference between Shimano and Look cleats/pedals? I see that they're pretty similarly priced. Any reason to choose one over the other?

I know that as you go up the range with Shimano through Tiagra > 105 > Ultegra, you're paying for higher quality when it comes to groupsets, but what's the benefit in choosing say a 105 pedal over the entry level R540, is it really just weight?

Appreciate any advice.

Rock on!

I've only used SPD-SL so can't comment on others such as look, but they look (appear) to be very similar. I use the yellow cleats which have a small amount of float, again I think Look do something similar.

I ride with some mates who use sppedplay pedals which seem to have the advantage of allowing float even during the pedal stroke.

I've got 105 pedals and ultegra pedals and there's not a lot of difference in use.

Look pedals are lighter and you can use them with campagnolo groupsets

Shimano pedals are more durable and the cleats last longer in my experience as they have sacrificial tabs which wear away before the cleat. They are also less slippery on polished surfaces.

The new 105 ones are pretty damn good.

By this I assume you mean mixing Campagnolo and Shimano is a fashion faux pas almost as bad as using a saddlebag.
