Passed away age 79 - Cancer
Winner of many of the big races in his career, including being world champ, Flanders, M-SR
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.
I only know what I've read about him, but he seems to have been pure class.
The Anquetil Trofeo Baracchi story is quality.
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.
Bit of a Nutter for the argy bargy in the sprint and "Today" they would be asking for some DQ's.
Tom Simpson got the better of him to win the World Road Championship
Rudi won it the following year in Germany.
A great all round racer and like Tom Simpson they started on the track and their paths crossed often.
Organiser, National Championship 50 mile Time Trial 1972
That's sad. My first bike was a catalogue one with Rudi Altig emblazoned on. It was a dog but good enough to get me hooked.
Thank you Rudi.
