Chainring and cassette in need of a change?

So yesterday I walked into a bikeshop due to a failed link in my chain (I cleaned it a few days earlier, and the pin didn't quite go in well). While he replaced the chain, he said my chainring and rear cassette were shot.

This comes as a surprise, because shifting has been really smooth and to me, they don't look too worn out. I've attached a picture of my cassette and chainring. The chainring in question has rather sharp teeth to begin with (https://static.bike24.com/i/p/1/3/31731_00_c.jpg)

Any opinions, should I replace them, or was he just trying to sell me stuff?

Thank you for any help!

The outer ring looks reasonably worn. The teeth are a lot sharper than on the inner ring. But the inner ring and cassette look pretty unworn.

If its changing gear ok and you aren't getting any chainsuck or dropping the chain on bumpy downhills then I wouldn't replace anything yet.

Slight "shark-fin" aspect to chainring but nothing too drastic. Probably still several hundred miles left in it.

That cassette looks fine to me. If your LBS is suggesting it needs replacing then I'd find another LBS - they're trying to gouge you for a new component that you don't need.

Alright, thanks a lot for the feedback!

I was reluctant to swap out components which look relatively good. I've kept my drivetrain clean regularly to avoid excessive wear. I just got a new chain too, so that should further prolong their lifespan. With the new chain, changing gears is really quick and quiet.

I have to order a new bottom bracket, so I was intending to order everything I need at once to avoid more than one postage fee.

The LBS was probably hoping you would just agree to new cassette and chain rings because you took the bike in to have a new chain fitted and saw you as an easy sale.

The new chain working well says the chainrings and cassette are definitely not worn otherwise they would slip. Ignore and ride.

Yeah, I would usually install the chain myself, but it happened on my way to work, so I just stopped at the closest LBS. Well, at least they got the job done pretty quickly. I usually do maintenance work myself, so I didn't jump on the replacement bandwagon
