Giant sizing

I've always had Large (56") framed Specialized bikes such as the Venge and Roubaix as I'm 5' 11" and struggling to decide on which sized Giant Propel Advanced Pro 2 I should get as according to their size chart I am slap bang in the middle of the overlap between the medium and medium/large. Am I right in thinking you always go for the smaller on an overlap?

Giant TCR Advanced SL 1 Disc 2020
Giant TCR Advanced 2 2020

Canyon Spectral CF 7.0 2019
Canyon Speedmax CF 8.0 Di2 2020
Wattbike Atom V2

I'm 5' 11" and I ride 54 or M bikes, fit me perfectly. Try it before.

I'm 6ft 1in/186 cm and ride a M/L on a Giant Propel and is perfect. Actually would suit someone slightly larger too.
If it helps my other bike is a 58cm Trek Madone
  • It's scary the variation written in these responses. Giant states I'm bang in the middle of the overlap of the medium and medium/large. I have always had 56's in every other brand after two different bike fits that have also confirmed that too so know 56 is right and have never had issues on them. Need to try and see which is right for me in a shop I guess as I'm right between them. I'm guessing the medium as I'm not the slimmest person in the world would sit me up a tiny bit

The standard advice I give to this question, if you want a racier feeling bike go for the smaller size - it'll probably put you in a somewhat lower position, and will be very slightly lighter.

If you want a more relaxed position for long rides, or have back troubles that would prevent you getting low, go for the larger one.

Rather than comparing frame "size", how do the stack and reach of the Venge and Propel compare?

    Those measurements should be available.

56", crikey how tall are you? How many X's before the L?

Bike sizing via a seatpost tube length is the dummest idea known to man, you can adjust the bike height within a significant range, you can't adjust the length by much at all.

As someone with unusually short legs I find height based guides totally useless as my longer torso needs a longer (larger size) bike, 5'9" and riding large in most bikes.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I think you'll find manufacturers base their sizes on conventional averagely proportioned people which is also why it's regarded as a size "guide". I was just trying to find out others experiences for assistance

The nearest to the 56 Venge is the M/L Giant, the Large Giant I believe in the TCR has a 58.5 top tube, its a big bike.

I worked in a Giant dealers and most 6ft cyclists rode a M/L Giant, a few even went for a M if they wanted an aggressive position, I don't think we ever sold an L Giant to anyone 6ft.
  • That's good information thank you

  • After comparing the respective websites model geometry it's clear the Medium/Large Giant is closest in dimensions to the 56" Venge so i think its safe to assume thats the ideal one for me

I went with large. As one of my other bikes was a large. Never looked at sizing. It feels great. Done around 700 miles on it now. Is there a substantial difference between m/l and large? And would this large frame be detrimental at all? Slightly concerned now haha.

    I'm also 6ft and ride a M/L.
My first TCR was a large that I bought online because I thought it would be OK.
Yes, it wa ok but I was using a 70mm stem. No issues but when I got my Advanced SL frame from a dealer I was measured with the BG fit thing and advised on the M/L.
Feels a lot better. I've more scope for changing stem length etc than I had before.

Wow! I'm 6ft1 and a bit, I did not fit an ML at all. I went for an L in the end.
  • This might help folks as its the same size guide for the TCR and Propel which utilises height and inside leg combined

I'm 6'5" the L was a bit S for me, so I went for XL and it's spot on.

Best is to go sit on one though, you (or I) might be oddly proportioned.
