I know it will have been talked about before but do any of you guys have your bike insured by an independent broker or do you just have it included with your home insurance? Are there any benefits to using an independent broker for insurance and how expensive is it?

Depends what you do with your bike.
Most home policies won't cover you if you have a crash and smash your bike up, and none at all will cover you if you're in a race. Also some bike specific insurance will cover some level of gear and accessories as standard. I'm with bikemo. Never had to claim yet but know someone who has and they were great. Plenty of cover, all scenarios, and pretty cheap.0 -

That's not true. Mine has a list of exclusions and racing isn't one of them. If it's not in the list of exclusions then it's covered.
There are several specialist companies who cover mountain bikes and riders and they advertise themselves as being suitable for racers.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
May Is suggest you do a search in the 'road' section - it's been covered many times.... Personally I use Pedalcover who do the house and bikes at a very, very good price."It must be true, it's on the internet" - Winston Churchill0

Most insurers cover accidental damage anywhere in the world (usually as an extra but much cheaper than bike insurance).
The only real reason to get separate bike insurance is because your bike is worth a shed load or you don't want to effect your house insurance no claims at the point of a damage of theft claim for your bike.

I use Legal and General and have my bikes added as part of the Home Insurance. I recently had one stolen from my shed and they paid out promptly with little fuss.Bird AM Zero (On Order )

The problem is my home insurance only covers up to £500 worth of Bike/Bike Accessories which are stored in the shed... but from the few companies that have come up on Google they are wanting way way way to much to insure my bike (some are rivalling my car insurance!!).0

How much is your bike(s) worth?0

Not a lot really, we've got:
Canyon Nerve - £1200
Voodoo Canzo - £800
and then hoping to get another bike in the £200-£300 region for my Mum to use. So no where near a lot of monies worth of bikes, I'd imagine that most people on here own a single bike which is worth more than all these combined.0 -
I've got ours covered with ETA for about £38 pcm. Orange Five £3k, Cube 140SL £2.2k and Scott £800. not sure if that's a good deal or not but covers loads of stuff not just theft.
PM me if you want more info,

You're right, the vast majority of insurers would take that risk on for a lot less than separate bike insurance, get on comparethemarket etc and have fun.0 -
I don't bother, I have basic householders so if the place burns down or gets cleaned out I'm ok. Costs about £50 a year I think.
Last bike I had stolen was in the 1970s when i was still at school. Was covered under my parents policy though.
Although I'm in the process of getting rid of stuff, up until recently I had a dozen or so bikes. Some in the shed, some in the conservatory. Most not worth very much.
I use a cheap old Kona to commute, anything decent is in the house, in my car (with me) or I'm riding it.I don't do smileys.

Thing is, your home insurance won't cover you if your bike gets pinched while you're out and about.
The bike I'm looking at is about £300 and Protect Your Bubble quotes £2.79 for it, though this may down to its brand and where I live. That covers theft, accidental damage and vandalism, though the excess for that policy range is £25.0
