Wonder if anyone has experience of this event ? - past editions have 1500m of elevation - and Ive heard people say its pretty tough.....

Iam a returning cyclist and I can currently do a 50 miles, averaging about 14mph - with about 500m elevation, without any real problems - the event is on July 10 -

Distance wise I think I will be fine - Im not great on the hills though - wonder if this has come to early for me ?...thoughts...

  • Depends how much training you're willing to do between now and then and how good you are at just pushing on.

It's definitely doable to get from your current riding to the level needed. You just need to commit to doing a 60-80 mile ride every weekend plus 2-3 shorter rides during the week.

An easy way to check is going out this weekend and do 80 miles and aim for a lot of hills. How you feel after that will give you a really good indication of your current fitness and ability to push a bit further than you're used to.

Any ride where you're doing a lot more distance than you're used to comes down to a general level of tolerance for keeping going when you're tired and would really like to stop and have some more cake.

I ve never been the most talented rider - but giving up isn't in my forte - so thanks for the words of encouragement - I will do the training you suggest....
  • Last weekend a friend did 155K with me purely from riding 6Keach way to work during the week and doing a single 80-100K ride each weekend for the preceding 4 weeks. She wasn't fast at the end of it but finished comfortably.

Don't think that or you're beaten already - my wife is 55 and astmatic and yesterday we did 63 miles and 6000 feet of climbing. (Apologies if you were being ironic!)
