Considering a new steel frame off the peg but what to do if I don't like the stock colour!? Anyone got any info/experience on stripping and re-spraying a frame? Cost and considerations? Nice pictures!?

Back in the day custom paint jobs were common on your custom steel frames. If you can imagine it they can paint it.
What's your favourite colour?0 -

I'm talking about an off the peg frame that would require stripping and repainting. And who is 'they'? I know Argos in Bristol strip and paint frames... does anyone else do it or would my local paint/spray shop be able to help? Wondering if anyone has done it.

I've had bikes painted by Mercian and Vernon Barker, both very good. Mercian did one of the bikes with the 'barbers pole' and contrasting details and it looks great. Vernon B did me an alloy frame and that turned out well. Have a scoot through the following "theys":

Even an off the peg frame usually has colour choices.
You'd have to have strong views to buy a bike that you hated the colour of and spend another 150 or so to get it sprayed up.
Plenty of resprayers out there. Just Google or have a look at the ads in the back of the comic?
A respray will have the bike looking as good as new. Which it would be in your case.0 -
Sorry I meant 'off the peg' as in a standard frame available in the shops. Reckon I can get a frame and have it custom painted for much less than a custom frame.
Cheers Andcp... some ideas there for sure.0 -

If you just want to change the colour to a single alternative rather than any fancy detailing, try googling for any local powder coating companies.
A year or so back I wanted to change the colour on a Genesis steel frame for my grandson. Found a local powder coating company that agreed to do it for £60 if I remember correctly. Caveat was that you had to pick one of the standard colours that they used in their general production runs. They would then let you know when that run was ongoing and you would drop the frame in for treatment. This involved masking any sensitive areas (BB threads etc), stripping the existing colour, and powder coating the new one in a batch process.
Job fell down when it was realised that the fork was carbon and would not survive the powder coating process (Oven bake at 200deg I think).
If your frame is all steel or if the forks are carbon and black and you're happy to leave them that way, then have a think about it.0 -

agree that power coating is a good and well wearing option.
personally, i'd just buy a frame in a colour i liked, you'll not get the same finish on a respray IMO0 -
Why not ? A good respray will make the bike as good as new in my experience.0

A bit late to the discussion but you could try Bob Jackson at http://www.bobjacksoncycles.co.uk/default.php?cPath=28&osCsid=bt8cch2i5v8776s31u4bt67f63
They do off the peg but built to order so you probably get to choose the colour. Possibly more expensive than what you were considering but maybe around the same when you factor in the respraying and a lot less faffing!Daithi, Cardiff0
