Flat handlebar, which direction for the sweep?

I have just picked up a new flat handlebar for my son (680mm) with a 9 degree sweep. But I'm a little stuck for which direction should the sweep go?

Should it go backwards i.e. coming back towards him? Or can it sweep down or should it go up? I guess it is personal preference?

Personal preference, whichever way feels most comfortable in your riding position.

Back if it's a flat bar.

Personally I find it most comfortable with the net sweep back and up in line with my forearms
