Flat handlebar, which direction for the sweep?

I have just picked up a new flat handlebar for my son (680mm) with a 9 degree sweep. But I'm a little stuck for which direction should the sweep go?
Should it go backwards i.e. coming back towards him? Or can it sweep down or should it go up? I guess it is personal preference?

Personally I find it most comfortable with the net sweep back and up in line with my forearmsCurrently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
