Where to get bike serviced in Bristol

Hi

I'm thinking of getting my Cannondale supersix serviced at the Bristol bike project as it seems good value, socially responsible etc. Just worried that they might not be up to it technically. Does anyone have any experience of them or a recommendation for anywhere else?

Thanks

Bikes don't need services in the same way as cars might do. Just look at a few YT videos and get the spanners out. Although depending on how long you have had the bike and its condition, it's quite possible that nothing will need doing to it anyway...

yepp, always makes me smile when I hear cyclists talking about getting bikes 'serviced' when the only thing the bike seems to need is some TLC every now and again. If the gears are slightly out then a simple twist of a barrel adjuster usually sorts that. Brake blocks just need to be checked/refaced and adjusted (usually just by simply using the adjuster at the top of the release). Jockey wheels and BB guides just need the odd squirt of 3in1. That's it. The rest is just about giving the bike a careful visual check, nothing more.

Other tasks like wiping/relubing the chain and checking it for wear are once in a while jobs whilst basic brake function and tyre/pressure checks should be part of standard bike prep for a ride.

So I ask for advice and you smile and laugh at my ignorance. Thanks. Would still appreciate a genuine response if anyone from Bristol can answer my question.

I don't think anyone is doing that. As I said, bike 'services' are are a bit of a myth. What are you expecting from this 'service'..?

Nope, just trying to say that bikes are not like F1 cars and don't 'need' a service and if they do it is not something that most people could not do themselves with a bit of prep and basic sense. Hence, rather than go through all the hassle of finding a shop, arranging to get your bike dropped off (which often involves a car journey with parking, etc.), then getting the bike picked up after paying for the work, why not have a look at what needs doing and see if you can sort it yourself?

Well there'should nothing that needs doing as such. I've had it for a year and ridden in rain etc so thought this was required. I was told it's standard practice. I clean regularly but thought they might remove and degrease cassette, check bearings etc.

As mentioned earlier, you can do all that with some YT clips and the right tools...

    Strada Cycles.

    Muddock.

    BW Cycling.

    Giant Bristol.

I an 'service' my bike, but I do like to leave it capable hands for a decent overhaul when required. I wash and degrease my bike each week and apply the usual checks listed above, but do like someone like Mike at Strada do look at it as and when.

All very capable shops above however. Hope this helps.

Another vote for Mike at Strada in Southville, he's a top bloke and very knowledgeable.

Just don't take a credit card in with you as you are likely to fall in love with some of the exotica he has in there and walk out with something worth more than a new small car :-)

    Tell him Jesse said Hi!
