Cannondale or Merida?

Hi,
I would ask for an advice. I'm going to buy an hardtail mtb and I have to choose between 2 models. I am very tall so I need a 23'' frame; I normally use my mtb to climb mountains on the road and sometimes go down in the hood.
I've found those 2 models:
- Cannonade trail 1
- Merida big.nine xt edition

What do you think is better? Thanks

Neither seem ideal for riding up roads or in the 'hood'. Why a mountain bike?

Aaah. Ok then. Where are you, this is mainly a UK forum so hard to recommend bikes (or prices) in other places.
