Help with rear derailleur

I recently bought a used bike online and got everything put together except for when it came to putting in the rear wheel. It looks like the derailleur, when compared it to online pics is "out of whack" for lack of a better term. The model is a shimano 2300. I have attached a photo of it minus the jockey wheels as i had to take them off to remove a loop in the chain.

My derailleur

How it should look?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Giles

Idk. I put the chain back in the jockey wheels and it still didn't work out. I have a mtb with quick release wheels and a shimano tourney rear derailleur and used that as a guide.

I may be wrong, but should not the spring pull the derailleur in the other direction. Then when the chain is threaded through it will be pulling against the spring tension.

    looks odd

is it mounted correctly? with shimano on the main pivot there's the b-screw that presses against the hanger under spring tension, if he rd is bolted on with this on the wrong side the body ends up in completely the wrong position

It looks to me like the cage has be taken off, and when put on rotated clockwise instead of anticlockwise to put the spring under load. Take the cage off, and rotate it anticlockwise by just over a turn - I reckon that should put the spring in tension by the right amount and position it where it should be.

I think pics 3&4 on that link are what you're referring to - the screw should be against the 'stop' to tension the RD.

But to me it looks like the jockey wheel cage lneeds to turn through 180 deg (relative to the 'parallel mechanism') to put the tension back on it.

No worries, good to know that someone else is thinking the same.

This is exactly what I thought, or at least there is something up with the spring. The following link explains how to remove the cage and put it back together properly, it would be worth a try:
