My mate who tries to take apart bikes and rebuild a bike, he was taking a MTB wheel to bits. He said he had a wild problem taking off the cassette of the wheel but he some how removed the cassette plus the part of hub where the cassette slides onto. It seems sieved onto the cassette.

I have 3 photo's of the cassette so you can understand better of what I mean bi I have no idea how to add a photo of it onto this post. Can someone keep me informed how it is done.

With some hubs with you can undo the axle nut on the driveside and the whole freehub and cassette just slides off.

There are plenty of hubs where the freehub (that's the part the cassette slides onto) can just be yanked out of the hub by hand - Hope are one. This is quite handy in the normal run of things, but it is possible for things to go wrong. For instance, your mate may possibly have forgotten to remove the cassette lockring, and then just pulled hard thinking that it should move. Another possibility is that one or more of the cassette sprockets has bitten deep into the freehub body and locked itself in place, so he may as well have forgotten to remove the cassette lockring. If it's the first one, remove the cassette lockring, print and laminate this answer and stick it on the wall of the garage for future reference. If it's the latter, try wiggling the sprockets around relative to one another with a pair of chain whips to loosen them.

    Other possibilities exist . . .

It is a bit disconcerting that you don't refer to that bit as a "freehub"

Sounds like he removed the freehub with the cassette still on or it is a freewheel, but the latter is unlikely as you need a special tool to remove a freewheel. He probably just removed the hub cap and the freehub did slide off

Should you not know these things?
