Going 1x with a long cage mech.

So the bottom bracket on my boardman has developed a death rattle, so is getting replaced at the end of the month.. Since I don't ever use the triple up front I've been looking at just getting a single speed set up. (Changing from fsa cranks to a Shimano setup.)

Will my standard long cage SRAM x5 mech be a no go with this plan? what are the drawbacks in keeping the current mech versus going shorter cage?

Not many drawbacks, obviously just sticks out a bit more than you need it too. Having a long cage mech will make it easier to run an expander if you wanted. Sram x5 isn't brilliant though, id definitely recommend you upgrade to a better shifter at least if not a shifter and dérailleur.

Long cage doesn't help with running an expander at all, the upper jockey wheel is in the same place and a short cage (rather than extra short) will usually have the capacity unless you have an FS both big chain growth.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Thanks for the help guys :) The mech and shifter will be changed at a later date. Financial restrictions and all :)
