New bike issues?
Hi all. I'm new to cycling so an sorry if I come across a bit stupid am trying to learn all the terminology. I recently brought a 13 intrusive beta from halfords as it seemed good spec for my budget. I've had it for about 3 weeks if that an done about 50-60 miles I'm a big lad and hugely unfit so not pushing to hard to soon. The last 2 rides I've been on the bike won't change from 1st gear to 2nd it seems to jump a few gears then jumps back again usually missing the gear I want. Does this sound like cable stretch or something more serious? Also what should I ask for when ordering new brakes I've decided on the kool stop think they black and pink do these seem right for my bike? Cheers Andy

The cables don't actually stretch they just bed in and what you describe happens Halfords will sort it out for you - or better still read the patrktools website or u tube vids on how to index gears and do it yourself. I prefer the Salmon (pink) koolstops myself many like swissstop green.
PS they won't fob you off this is what happens on most new bikes after a few rides the cables need a wee tweak.0 -
If the gears were tuned correctly when the bike was built. The new cables will stretch a bit at first as everything beds in, so will need a service.
Theres an adjustment knob ( or barrel) on the rear derailleur that you can pull back to unlock and turn to take up the sack in the cable. While standing behind the bike and looking down at the rear derailleur, to fix hesitation shifting into lower gears (to larger cogs) turn the adjuster anticlockwise. For slow shifting into higher gears (smaller cogs) turn it the other way, clockwise. Small adjustments 1/4 or 1/2 a turn at a time and count how many so you can always go back if it doesnt fix it.

Or in even simpler terms - whichever way you want the chain to move, turn the barrel the opposite way.0
