Just got myself a Garmin Edge 810 which I am loving.
I've only used the training pages while on rides on familiar courses so I don't need to check the GPS.
However I want to start exploring and finding cool new places, I have a couple of courses that I've created and sent to the Garmin.
I'm a bit nervous riding on unfamiliar roads while trying to navigate on the GPS when I should be making turns etc. so was wondering if anyone had any tips while riding and on the navigation settings to lay my nerves to rest, I know there's like auto zoom and keep on road features etc. so what works well for you.

Why not create a route you know and download that to the Garmin. That way you can see how it works without the worry of being on unknown roads.

Yeah I thought about that but in the back of my mind I still know where I'm going I'm talking about advice using a new route not rode before and trying to not get lost.

Use turn by turn navigation so that you get an audible beep when a turn is coming up or if you go off course.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

I personally prefer to have my phone on an armband and use a GPS app. That way I can get audible prompts (e.g. turn left in 100metres) and don't have to keep an eye on the cycling computer.
    Something like this:

Since I don't have the screen on, the phone lasts a few hours.
