Not the greatest journey of my life

Tonight I am off camping for the weekend with the family, decided instead of driving in to work I would cycle.
Not only am I saving fuel, not producing any high levels of C02 I am also getting some extra miles in.

Planned the route last night, 36 miles.

Up at 4:30 this morning and out the door by 5:30.

About 15 miles into the journey I couldn't move upto the big ring, for some reason it just wouldn't kick in, decided id stay in the small ring as annoying as it was but would keep me going.

No more than 3 miles later I felt my legs go from side to side, look down and the left side crank cap come's off and the crank swiftly follows still attached to my shoe.

Lucky enough I didn't come off but I had limited tools and made good best I could, kept it as a single speed into work and will need to get it apart and see what happened.

But I made it!!

Once had similar happen to me...it's very difficult trying to dismount from the bike gracefully when you're still clipped into pedals and crank arms that are no longer attached to the bike

Yeah, I had exactly that once. Somehow the crank bolts come loose. A replacement cap and tightened up and it's okay.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

Ahhhhhh that's what's missing. The cap!!

That would clear that issue up.

Happened to me on way home from work , and get this after new drivetrain fitted by LBS !!! that very afternoon .
People say , you are taking a risk buying on line from Planet X etc as opposed to LBS service , not in my experience you are not.
