BB30 Should I consider it a "consumable" now?

Just thinking about buying a second hand Boardman CX team as a commuter/exploring bike. I was curious to read so many posts about needing to replace the bottom bracket. Particularly since I have never cycled hard enough to need to change one in my life. So I phoned my local shop and yes, inspection and adjustment is part of their standard service, they carry spares and they know people who get though 3 sets a year (not necessarily on Boardmans)!
Has design sacrificed reliability for lightness? Is that just the way things are? Must I resign myself to a long term service relationship?, or it is the case that only pedal-stomping supermen and pressure washers kill them?

Yes, bb30 bearings are designed with weight and stiffness in mind. If you want reliability then an older style chainset and a good old sealed one. They were ace.

I was getting the BB30 regreased every 6 months on my Caadx at £20 a time. I spent that £20 a few tools and now regrease it myself once it starts to creak again. See my post in the Workshop section of this forum.1998 Kona Cindercone in singlespeed commute spec
