shoes for trail rides

    I have been using my Nike free run 5.0, they work a treat. I don't believe in all the nonsense of having to buy all the gear just because you cycle. In a way I like how much feet slip off the pedals slightly, gives trail riding that little edge of excitement and uncertainty !

    Is there any advantage in using the trainer style SPD shoes (ie Shimano AM) over XC shoes? I assume if you combine with 'trail' pedals you can still be in control of the bike but have your foot unclipped through techy stuff? I'm mostly a roadie and have always been using flats for trail riding but its really no good on my knees.

    Nope, ideally you need stiff soles, Nike Free are a flexy as can be. Not great for long or gnarly rides.
    And they'll wear out in minutes.

    I do run in a pair and even pootle to the shops but not for serious riding.
    I don't do smileys.

    Ha I'm still deciding which one to buy, CRC is still on sale and am41 2015 and 5.10 freerider canvas are still on sale. Really want to get one as my vans is at its limit haha, but not sure if CRC will put new footware on their next sale if there is one in 3days.

    At the moment I am using some old DC trainers but forking out for some Fox trainers next month, Iv heard some good things about them and how they don't wear that much when scuffed up. Provided a linky to have a look if anyone is interested :D

    Yeah I saw the same shoes at the bike hub at Swinley Forest for £55 which I think its okay but haven't really read any reviews about it or tried it on. I might actually try it this weekend if I haven't decided until then. Because £15 more then I can get the 5.10 freedrider but they say it takes forever for it to dry.

    I can confirm they do take forever to dry. A friend bought some last month and was maoning down the phone about how he had to put the out to dry after getting them soaked to the core :D

    When I grab a pair of the fox trainers il wear them in and come back and give my thoughts on them more :)
