Best way to protect a mobile phone

Two of my riding group have had 'offs' recently. In both cases they were ok, but on both occasions their phones got damaged. One was an iPhone which was damaged beyond repair. As I have just purchased a new phone myself I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a harder protection case which also offers waterproof protection. I've fitted an additional protective glass screen and put phone in a slim gel case which offers drop protection, but don't think these would fully protect in the event of a crash.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
(I have posted this in the road section too but also came here as I do go out on the mtb too and am guessing that mobile phone protection is even more of an issue for mtb)

Some of the gear, less than no idea...0 -
I put it in my camel back in it's leather flip case and that's it.
I do put it in a pocket in there and there's a folded emergency blanket in there to add extra padding, but that's it really0 -
I keep mine in the top pocket of my camelback.
In eight years of crashing spectacularly and breaking various bones I have never damaged a phone.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

I only carry a mobile so that whoever finds my sorry carcass can phone the wife to tell I won't be home for tea.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I'm surprised you have one. People your age don't usually like technology.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Agreed that the best way is to put it inside a Camelback. Saying that when I ride the road bike I still need a solution for putting it in the back pocket.
As for not riding with a phone, I just think it can be very useful to have one when riding alone for mechanical/ safety issues!0
