How the hell do I install a Shimano quick link thing???

Needed to replace my my chain, so I'm trying to install a new one. It comes with some stupid quick link thing that for the life of me I cannot work out how to put on. I've just spent the past half hour or so trying to Google instructions but I'm still none the wiser! I've got two plates: one with a hole, and the other with two fixed pins. How the hell do I put this on??
You'd think there would be instructions included, but there was zero!
It was much easier and simpler with old joining pins.........

Yeah, I've seen that one; and couldn't make head nor tale of it........0 -
What make and speed chain is it?
Some 7- and 8-speed Shimano chains had the type of link you describe.
If it's like the one philcubed linked to it looks simple enough to install.
Nearly all new 9-speed plus chains use the KMC or SRAM type quick link where each plate has a pin and a receiving hole.“Life has been unfaithful
And it all promised so so much”
Giant Trance 2 27.5 2016 ¦ Sonder Broken Road 2021¦ Giant Revolt Advanced 2 2019 ¦ Giant Toughtroad SLR 1 2019 ¦ Giant Anthem 3 2015 ¦ Specialized Myka Comp FSR 20090 -
And that isn't exactly the same as the one I've got. On that one of the pins has a grove at the bottom, but on mine both pins are exactly the same!JBA wrote:What make and speed chain is it?

It's an CN-HG40 chain. I have an 8 speed drivetrain.0 -
Looks crazy. Throw it away and buy a KMC 8 speed quick link on Ebay.I don't do smileys.

Just had a look at the reviews on Wiggle and it seems a load of people have had trouble with it. I even found an old thread on here with someone with the same problem, but no solution.0

I gave up on the supplied link, and slapped the Clarks one on. Much, much easier. On and done within a few seconds.0

A ten speed link won't work on an 7/8 speed chain as its too narrow....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

And on another note, I read that they are not re-usable! What's the point then? You might as well just use a joining pin!0 -

Seems like the worst of both worlds then. Think you did the right thing...0
