"All-weather" Jersey, 8-16 degrees?

Any suggestions for a good all-weather jersey (ie waterproof, or at least water-resistant, but breathable enough that I won't keel over), that will cover temperatures from about 8 to 16 degrees?

10 degrees and below I have an Alpha jacket. About 16 degrees, a standard SS jersey is fine (with a lightweight waterproof in the back pocket). But we're heading into that time of year when the Alpha's too warm, but the weather is unpredictable enough to have me stopping to put on/take off a waterproof two or three times every ride! I just want to wear & go.

IF you love the Alpha then the Perfetto appears to be the boy. After all, it is an Alpha for all the claims that it's a Gabba.

I have one on the way this week but also the Lusso Corsa jersey which is all round waterproof, lite and has been tested up to about 18 degrees apparently. Let you know how it goes!

Thanks! I don't really know what to expect yet. I need to pay saddleback for a review sample tomorrow, no freebies. That should get here Wednesday I hope. Corsa should be same time.

Road.cc loved the Perfertto today. No surprise from me, I rated the Alpha very highly.

Well, according to Castelli, perfect Gabba SS, Perfetto and Alpha range.

16 degrees yesterday and was fine in SS Gabba (a bit warm to be honest) but 8 degrees I'd be reaching for the LS version with a decent baselayer. Not sure I have anything that will do that whole range. Best perhaps is the Trasparente which should be just about comfortable at either of the 2 extremes mentioned with the right underthings. Not that weather proof though.

    Convertible Gabba?

Alpha will do that range. And keep out water longer than the Gabba. That's why the Perfetto looks so good. Just add some arm warmers for the lower temps.

Lots of alternatives to the Gabba coming out - Castelli seem to be heading for weather proofing in some form for all their jerseys. Its good to see the rise of some UK based companies like Lusso - as mentioned by Bender. Stolen Goat, another Uk based company seems to be gettting a lot of love from the readers of Road cc for the Orkaan jersey. Bender, what do you make of stolen goat - have you got in touch with them?

I have and, sadly, it was a no go. But at least they were amongst those who respond and consider. Many just ignore.

There's a discussion about it on road.cc at the moment. Says that the Goat is a Bio Racer? And that there are some really cheap ones at Wiggle.

Of all the ones out there, most of which are still "jacket lite" the Goat is the one that really does look what the Rapha Shadow claims to be, a true jersey.

SS Gabba with mesh base layer and arm warmers. Worked for me this weekend where it was 6-12 degrees. That's also moving into SS Jersey, arm warmers and gillet territory.

Of course, the Perfetto vest is another canny option.

Interesting reading the comments section and the chap who claims that the Gabba was claimed to be waterproof for a long time. Castelli never made that claim, indeed it's hard to know where it actually came from, just became some sort of internet lore. Endura looks to be another tidy option.

This was something that I was after recently - I went for the Lusso Corsa, with matching arm warmers from Merlin.

    https://www.merlincycles.com/lusso-aqua ... 85573.html

But I was also considering the dhb Rain Defence jersey.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-aeron-rain- ... ve-jersey/

The only real reason I left the dhb alone was due to lack of reviews. Cyclist Mags website had a bit of a buying guide to some of the offerings for this type of thing a while back: http://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/1134/all-weather-jerseys

Evans has a cracking deal on the Endura by the way: https://www.evanscycles.com/endura-equi ... y-EV227283

I can't see theres one jersey for that range of temperature. Plus what weather ? Sunny ? Windy ? Wet ?
8 degrees something like a LS roubaix jersey.
8 degrees and windy - light gilet over the top
16 degrees and sunny - SS top
16 degrees and windy SS top and armwarmers

    etc etc etc

(isn't this question like 'what one bike do I want ? - you could get by with a winter bike year round, but probably nicer to have a winter and summer at the least...)

5 degrees at 0600 = Gabba. 16 degrees at 1200 = still wearing the gabba +/- arm warmers. Sunny? yep. Windy? yep. Wet? yep.

Do you not live in the UK Fenix?

  • Charlie's pretty much got it. The Alpha is too warm on a day like today - ideal going out of the door at 7am, but way too hot at 5pm. My current solution is a LS spot wool jersey, with ultralight wind proof and base layer in the morning, and no base layer or wind proof in the afternoon. But that doesn't work so well when it's wet. Of course my daily journey's so short that it perhaps doesn't matter too much, but I'd like something that can be paired with arm warmers in the morning, without in the afternoon, and still has a chance of keeping me dry without anything else.

But what I really need it for is club rides on a Saturday - especially the sort when it decided to rain-shine-rain-shine. I'm hoping that last Saturday was the last time the Alpha comes out to play until October, but it sure as heck isn't going to stay dry that long. Once the temperature is much over 16 degrees, it doesn't matter if it rains, but I could really do with something that covers the range between Alpha and summer-weight gear - and which doesn't require faffing about with a rain cape.

If it's not raining, and isn't going to, the best range is probably the Assos Intermediate S7 jersey. Surprisingly good at anything down to 6 (as long as 6 isn't for too long) all the way up to about 20.....

  • Just read your review of the Perfetto. It sounds like it will fit the bill admirably. But I'm waiting until you get properly rained on to be sure!

I recently bought the Gore Bike Wear Power soft shell wind-stopper SS jersey....AMAZING!!! Great top for 3 season! Just pick the right base layer and warmers if needed and you're good to go!

Cycled to work yesterday (London), 8 degrees in the morning and chest nice and warm and then it was 20 degrees on the way back, jersey worked a treat, blocked the wind/breeze and felt comfortable throughout, the material is top drawer and great fit.

I am 37 chest and a size small fitted brilliantly.

I'll check Monday! In the meantime, when funds allow, I might try that Gore as well.

Agreed that these are excellent in conditions where there might be a cold wind at times or some light drizzle. The front windstopper panels work well and the jersey is still very breathable. Wouldn't fancy being out for long in any heavier rain though - I still carry a rain cape in the back pocket for those days.

Picked my Gore jersey up for £25 quid on Ebay unused with tags. Result!

Etxeondo a "gabba" like jersey called the WS Team Edition, I have one and it is my most used bit of kit!

The arm warmers are a terrible fit, just too baggy, that said I have used them with a long sleeve base layer underneath.

I have worn it with in gold weather in the winter with layers underneath and also yesterday morning for my commute to work and its fine, didn't wear it training last night as was too warm at around 18 degrees, but for everything else it gets a thumbs up from me and its much cheaper than the Gabba.

    This is the one I have http://www.etxeondo.com/etxeondo/de/jer ... esion=1347

depending on your size Wiggle have them cheap at the moment too
