Why when I go for a ride do I always find the solitary flint in an otherwise clear road ???
This seems to happen even more often if my tyres are new

Are you sure it wasn't already in your tyre froma previous ride?
It's well worth doing regularly inspections, deflate then rotate the wheel and check every cut and hole, only takes a few minutes and could save you another spoiled ride.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -

even if you don't deflate, a regular inspection is worth it. I do it every evening before my commute home, ie every 40 miles. I carry a tiny penknife with me to poke every hole and tease out any bad boys I find.
