sizing a new mtb

So what should you be looking for/at when buying a mtb regarding size. Given I often seem to be smack bang between the S or M frame benefits of going small and those of sizing up are?

All trail/ Xc riding and novice/intermediate ability.

Best way to get it right is to go to a shop which specialises in mountain bikes. Avoid big chain shops like Halfords, Evans etc or shops with mostly road bikes.
