but I enjoy chasing and collecting koms and cr's and put on lot of effort into getting them. Might be sad in some people's eyes

    Indeed

If I had the capability to get KOMs then I'm sure I would try and get them, and why not :)

it's easy, just ride somewhere no-one on strava has, make it a segment, you'll be KOM.

unfortunately, in my experience, you won't keep it for long.

Indeed! And it isn't that easy to find somewhere that no one on Strava has been. Even if there are no segments, that doesn't mean somebody hasn't been through before without bothering to create one.

Didn't someone on here create a Strava segment on their driveway just so that they could be a KOM for once...only to find that someone else 'grabbed' it soon afterwards by a GPS mis-tracking from them riding on a cycle path that was parallel right next to the driveway. Trouble was that the drive-by pace was so fast the OP never had a chance of ever grabbing the segment back :-)

I did a little segment around my village - of no interest to anyone but just a little personal challenge. Then a plank went and beat me. Not by something I couldn't take back but I can't really be arsed. I plan to drive the segment just fast enough that the plank (he is a plank because he just seems to search for segments, however crap, just to KOM them and he is also a plank because he has a really moronic Strava name) will want to beat it but won't be able to.

I did do a really stupid segment covering every road in the village at least once. Even following it on the GPS it was really hard to complete because there were so many turns that the GPS couldn't really keep up. I had hoped that the plank would fall for it and try it but, if he has, he hasn't yet succeeded!

Can't think why this activity has been flagged, looks legit. 25 miles in a little over 2 hours.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I've seen plenty of mini rounabout segments one which was multiple times. Haha. Quite a few people had done it as well.

If someone upsets you on there just put all their KOM's as a dangerous segment. That will please them!

round my way a lot of KOMs are done by people on mopeds. or even worse a really fast chaingang where one of the riders then launches a sprint at the end that makes it very difficult to feature!

also a lot of sub 1 minute ones are often comically out... and I've had a hilarious result a few times where I've had a 3000 vam rating. me, climb, don't be silly!

Yesterday I forgot my phone, so didn't have strava on. There's a wee climb on the way home that is my usual challenge and reference point, my PR was 6:25 which puts me about 200th out of 600: I had a bit of a tailwind yesterday and monstered up it - the start and finish are at slightly non-obvious points, but my time was definitely something well under 6 minutes.
It would be really quite easy to take a previous trip, tweak the timestamps and upload it...

My 7 year old son insisted on trying to ride his bike up a stony footpath hill at a local park, much to the amusement of those walking up and down it as I had to push him the whole way.

It's never been attempted since. One of 2 KOMs for me.

Indeed, I saw a really comical one the other day. Its the footbridge over the Clyde expressway. Up the steps across several road lanes down the steps the other side. The KOM is 4s which is 78.9mph!

Ah Glasgow... another massively stupid segment nearby is/was one that went through the covered walkway from the SECC to the station. It's shared with pedestrians and features two blind 90 degree corners, but some geniuses think it's fair game for sprinting through! I flagged it as hazardous as soon as I noticed it, totally braindead thing to do. I was just poking around there again because I hadn't looked recently, and someone else has now created a segment for the "climb" (aka a very gentle rise) in the first part of the walkway here - note how it ends in a 90 degree turn, ideal for sprinting towards! Flagged that too.

I think a lot of people don't realise how inaccurate GPS data can actually be most of the time. On short segments especially your GPS being even 10 metres out is going to make a huge difference when you're moving quickly, and if there's any obstruction overhead or around you (e.g. tall buildings, dense tree cover, hills) that block the satellite signals, it's not going to work very well if at all.

Clearly, not having your phone with you made you lighter

    plenty of fakes.
I did a bit of Strava mapping in Italy and the segments come up with near ridiculous results... according to Strava there are hundreds of amateurs out there who can turn their pedals and climb with a VAM in excess of 1600 mt/h on an half an hour climb, which give or take it's there with Froome and Quintana.

Not hundreds but round my way there are 1 to 2 amateurs who can climb at that rate over a HC col.

Oh and didn't I hate it the other day when I rode out of work and up a back road only to see Dan Bleedin' Lloyd had the kom!
