Just looking at replacement bike for the 9sp tourer, maybe a cyclo cross should be suitable, checking them out they seem to have 11 sp cassttes- and £75 each wtf

    Not sure what you're looking at (manufacturer and model) but there's nothing wrong with a 105 cassette;

Yep, that's a fair few pounds worth.

Any third parties that make an alternative?

Well an 11sp cassette won't be much good to you with a 9sp bike? Or is that orthogonal to the situation?

Is that what they mean by the saying less is more? You do away with the complication of a front mech and multiple chainrings to go 1x11 and they charge you lots more money for the privilege.

The SRAM XG cassettes are obscene, and it's only so you can have a 10T rather than an 11. Stick a normal wheel on there and you can use any 11speed cassette, but if you want a big range you're stuck with shimano XT as the cheapest at about £50.

  • Is 11 speed a thing now then?

I'm still on 9 and only just realised they had gone to 10 speed!

Of course back in my day all good racers were 10-speed.

Yes - it's so you can put an 11 tooth on without messing up the gears you actually need.

I still miss my 10 speed Falcon that got nicked from outside a shop on Wimbledon Broadway.

I'll never go 11... it's a prime number, how can you make half gears if you are on 11? You can make half gears with 10 speed and 1/3 of a gear with 9 speed, that gets you up the mountains quicker...

Yeah, but 11 speed gets you closer to the holy grail that is 12 speed. sixths, quarters, thirds, halves. Think of all the free speed.

Reason why I've gone single speed.

What sucks if like me, you will use the same 3 gears on a 11 speed, you wear those out quick, and need to replace the whole lot.

Something like this will be plenty, with a mega range sprocket

I will upgrade to 12 speed, but not to 11... ha! Yes. Considering I run 12-30 in 10 speed I've thought about upgrading to 11 speed but given the available combinations of cassettes it would effectively just mean adding an 11T cog which I won't use, and then I'm back to having a 10 speed drivetrain again!
  • The first mountain bike I bought had a seven speed block.

I thought I was the dog's danglies with that, and resisted moving to eight because I didn't think I'd ever use the extra one!

I've got SRAM 1x11 on my full suspension Whyte - love it!! The XG1150 cassette fits only on an XD driver body - so at the moment at least you're limited to Sram cassettes.

Am I right in thinking 11 speed Shimano cassettes work with 11 speed Campag stuff?? Am sure I saw some posh road bike kitted out with SR and a DA block!

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Yes, the width of the cassette is only 0.5 mm different or if you prefer 0.05 mm difference per sprocket, which is well within the drivetrain tolerance
