Sub £500 Bike

Any recommend a bike sub £500, as a good starter bike? I would prefer to get something that's already discounted/last years model to get more quality for my money. Need size XL. Giant Defy 5, Scott Speedster 60 any good? or anything else around?

Have you been to any of your local bike shops (LBS), to see what they have in stock that may be suitable.
