Strava, You Learn Something New Every Day

As our parents used to say "Every day is another day at school"

Today I learned that if you do circuits / laps, Strava only gives you the elevation gain once, i.e. for the first circuit.

I am sure most people already new this but I didn't and maybe some other people don't.

That's it really.

Never knew that! Just looked at a ride i done last week with a mate, 3 laps of a little off road trail.
My starva recorded on an Iphone 4s says i done 33ft of elevation total ride, then you look at one lap and it says 53ft...

My mate uses a garmin 520 then uploads to strava, his shows 322ft for the total ride and 66ft per lap. So that doesnt sound right either!

I have noticed a massive difference on rides with people using garmins and me and one other mate that use iphones. The garmins always show way more climbing.

No wonder they kick my arse every month on the climbing challenge!
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...

Are you talking about the Strava app or website?

I get elevation gain for all laps - i.e. total elevation I have gained over the course of the ride.

Strava isn't brilliant for elevation. I'm pretty sure you're meant to get the full amount and not just one lap.

Just checked my 10 lapper and it's definitely total elevation recorded.

I would think that's extremely unlikely and something has gone wrong with your setup somehow.

Never had an issue with this.

Just looking at most recent laps of Richmond Park I have done, and that adds the right elevation per lap to the total.

All on Garmin 520, but worked same on 500.

Did around 40 laps of an airfield once and that recognised total elevation rather than the first lap?

I don't use strava (i know, i'm not really a cyclist,, right!) but don't people do everesting challenges and record them on strava? So it must record all laps?

Sounds like something has gone wrong somewhere.

Don't know about garmin cycle GPS's but their normal units have barometric sensors so surely they would be more accurate than phones using software for height recording?
  • Thanks for your input, reading between the lines it appears to affect those of us using phones rather than the specific Garmin type things.

Whatever you do, don't use the app in the mountains - digital elevation doping occurs!

Any when I do hill repeats Strava totals the lot, not just one repeat, so I'd agree, something's up with the OPs system.

The last time I did anything like a series of laps my iPhone recorded the total elevation on Strava, but having said that the 'laps' weren't exactly the same route every time - I just repeated some local climbs.
This was back in January, and there have been software updates since then, so not sure if that's making a difference?
