Hi all need some advice. me and a friend are biking to the lake district which is about 152 miles away and we are wanting to get some panniers or something for our mountain bikes to hold a tent and some innertubes and other small tools ect. but im not sure which ones will fit on our bikes. Could really do with some advice for those of you that have experience with touring ect.

You should be able to use any normal rack on your bike although may need extenders on the seat stay mounts at the top of the seat stays depending on the size/shape. Make sure it doesn't foul your disc brake - might be worth trying to find a shop that stocks a few different types so you can check before having to faff about either modifying or sending back.

Your mate looks like he'll need a seat post mounted one - not sure I'd want to put too much weight on it and it limits the carrying options a bit but better than you lugging all his kit...

Forgot to say - I did 1500 miles around south Spain with a Blackburn one fitted to an old Trek 7000 - was solid as a rock and survived a few crashes better than I did... Make sure your panniers are waterproof or you put stuff in waterproof bags inside the panniers...
  • Thanks for the tip ill take a look at some seat post mounts

Happened to be in Halfords this pm and noticed they had what looked like a seat post mounted rack that had some clip on frame which would then allow you to run panniers rather than it being just a seat post mounted shelf. I can't find the same thing on their website to give you a link but if Halfords sell them, they shouldn't be too tricky to track down...

Personally, given the choice i'd still want a "proper" rack where possible - like I mentioned, yours has the necessary rack mounts on the frame, it's the orange that will be needing the seat post style.

Orange (any Orange) is the Rolls Royce of bicycles and rather than a rack you should have a servant running behind you with all your stuff.
...take your pickelf on your holibobs.... :D

    jeez

Add up the money but if you re buying racks and bags, you may be better off with bikepacking kit. Have a google to see what I mean (there are a lot of US based blogs on it). Try https://www.alpkit.com/bike-luggage for cheap, but good quality lightweight kit
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
