Hello,

I am looking for some insight and opinion on a couple mountain bikes. I am newbie to mountain biking and am not familiar with the quality of the components on them. The last bike I owned was a Trek 830 antelope from the early 90's (loved that bike). Now I have a son and want to teach him how to ride and take him on some trails. I have gone to my local shop and talked with the owner at some length about how far they have come over the years and how much you have to spend to get a quality "starter" mountain bike. I have up to $1000 (700 pounds or so) to spend on a bike and am trying to figure out which of these bikes has the best "bang for the buck" for the money and what terrain I want to ride on.

I live in the Appalacian mountains where there are trails everywhere. Both novice and expert. I would like to buy something that I will not be needing to upgrade right away. I would rather spend a little more up front than having to replace components after I beat it up on the trail a little. That being said I am not trying to overspend for my needs either. I want to ride with my boy on basic dirt trails but also be able to tackle some more difficult terrain when i am by myself or with a buddy.

I am looking at two bikes in particular. One is the Trek X-Caliber 8

another is the Cannonade Trail 2
http://www.cannondale.com/USA/Bike/ProductDetail?Id=1cf6910b-a642-47b9-86ea-feb73b77f4e4

Both of these bikes are on sale currently at local shop for just under $1000. I am looking for an experienced persons' opinion on these two models and their components and which is the better bike for the money. I know that they have different components but I am looking for help on which bike has the better all around package. I do not know enough about components to make an educated decision.

Thank you for any advice given. It is appreciated.

At the same price, the Cannondale has a better fork and brakes. Plus Shimano componenets which I prefer to Sram, but that's personal.
