Taking a bike on Amtrak

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for my question but here it is: Later this year, I'm planning on riding down to San Luis Obispo from Fremont and taking Amtrak back to San Jose. I went to Amtrak's website for info on bringing the bike onto the train. It seems that I can "purchase a bicycle box at MOST staffed locations for $15 per box". That was the best info I could find. Has anyone had any experience taking their bikes on Amtrak from SLO to SJ? I'd appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

This is a Uk based web forum, so no-one on here can help you with Amtrak I'm afraid!

I am not sure whether he covers it and I don't have time to check this morning, but the following site is excellent for all things train travel around the world.
