Frame size

I am currently in a bit of a dilemma, I have an old Trek Aplha 1000 road bike I got when I was younger which has a 43cm frame, I currently have it permanently set up on my turbo and have stuck in a long seat post to get the right saddle height (I usually ride a 54/56cm frame). I was thinking about spending a few hundred quid on it to make it road worthy again to use as a bit of a winter/training bike. I would have thought trying to get a 43cm frame to fit a 176cm rider would have an affect on the handling, which I obviously don't need to worry about at the moment with it on the turbo but when measuring up the frame the top tube is 56cm (the same as my other road bike) and so as I wouldn't need a massive stem or anything on the front end I was wondering what peoples suggestions were as to if this would be a good idea or if anyone has done anything similar before and has any information on how it handles out on the road?

Thanks in advance

That's a small frame for your size! The main issue riding on the road would be the cramped position you would more than likely to be in. I doubt you'd remain comfortable for too long. Handing shouldn't be an issue. You can ride bikes a couple of frames sizes either up or down without problems.

To be honest you're much better using the £200 to £300 on buy a good second hand bike or something new like a B Twin or Carrera.

Keep this one for turbo duties!
