Best winter commuter / lightweight tourer for a grand?

So I thought I was going to get a Croix de Fer or an Equilibrium but it seems they are both a bit on the heavy side. I have to lug it up and down stairs every day, and I find even with my Allez Triple I'm whacking it against the walls etc.
As much as I'd like to do a build, Cyclescheme gets me 40% off so I'm looking at a complete bike.
Not too bothered about disc brakes.
Have been recommended Kinesis Racelight, Condor Fratelli and a Planet-X London Road so far...
Thanks in advance.

I can't see how saving a kg or so will prevent you whacking it against walls? My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Go to a shop, see which ones you like the look of and give them a try (I think you can try most of the ones you mentioned at Evans).
I'm a CdF fan, but appreciate they're not everyone's cup of tea. That said, I can't believe there is much more than 1Kg of difference in weight between the ones you've mentioned. IMO this isn't a big deal for a commuter or winter hack.0
