Looking some advise, bought a Planet X RT58 bike just over two years ago, left in into a local bike shop today to get the rear gear cable replaced, but the mechanic cannot get the cable back through the frame as there is something obstructing it, so i rang Planet X to ask for some guidance and spoke to their customer service dept, they tell me that because the frame is outside the two year warranty period there is nothing they can do, but if you would like a new frame it will cost you £799, great, so i just Googled my bike and model number and there are other people in the same boat that im currently in, so i ring Planet X again and explain this to them only to be told sorry this is the first time we have had any issues with any RT58 carbon frames. so what should i do now?

ITs a common theme with Planet X customer service, keep ringing them until you get somoene more helpful. Tell him you just want advice and you are happy to pay for your local mechanic if its something simple they are aware of.

Well why are you contacting planet x. The lbs should either carry out the work or return the bike to you in the same state that you left it I would have thought.

Sounds to me like he is ringing planet x asking for advice /solution, as the lbs is a bit stumped.
Seems perfectly logical to me to ring the manufacturer asking for a solution.

    OP sounds a right PITA.
Is there another lbs you can try?

As redvision said, i read on here and another forum that other RT58 owners had issues with rear cables, no solution they had to buy new frames. i will try another bike shop Tuesday as all shops here are closed until then due to the Easter holidays.

Spent the last hour and a half fiddling with the bike, so i can get a cable to feed inside the frame from the front entry point about 18ins and can also get another cable to feed from the back exit point of the frame for about 22ins but they are not meeting inside the frame,

Does removing the BB throw any light on what may be causing the obstruction?

Had the crankset off earlier its a totally sealed unit, no holes in there for cables

  • If you get really desperate try and find an engineering inspection company that has a borescope and ask them to have a look down the tubes.

You can also try getting a TIG filler welding rod in 1.6mm dia to thread into the frame if you get this through the frame and passed the obstruction you can then thread a thin walled small dia tube over the wire rod pull this through the frame now thread the new gear cable through the tube then remove the tube

if you are local wish to DN350SN I will have a go for you if you drop it off with me. I move to Manchester in a months time so that may be better for you.

There's probably some loose fibre inside the tube that obstruct the channel... it happens in some Chinese rims too. In the latter case I have always sorted it with a drill (being careful). If it's deep down the tube, then try using some steel wire of some description to dislodge the bundle.

It happens in the best frames too, it's part of the in mould process, wouldn't happen in the case of filament woven tubes, but nobody use them anymore
