Shimano chainset axle worn?

Hi all, my road bike has a Ultregra 6600 chainset which has been in solid use for a good few years. I've noticed that there is a some play in the bottom bracket. Taking things apart, it looks like the axle (attached to the chainset) is polished, maybe even worn where it contacts the plastic insterts in the BB bearings. Going to order a new BB as my first thing to rule out, but wondered if axle wear leading to BB play is a known thing for HTII setups? The 6600 chainset has an alloy axle BTW.

Cheers

I don't think so. The play is more likely to be the bottom bracket.

I bought a used 6600 chainset for my winter bike and it has quite a lot of wear where the axle contacts the bearings. A new BB and it doesn't have any play.

Definitely the cheaper thing to test so I'd start there.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

New 6800 BB now fitted and it seems to be fine. Guess I was worrying about nothing.

    Creaking sound also gone :)
