Hi everyone I am at a point where my bike needs some serious maintenance, and I need some help of what parts to but, as I've never replaced anything beyond wheels tyres or tubes.

My bike: Kona Shred 2012 (ice white color) http://2k12.konaworld.com/gravity_hardt ... tent=shred

The things that need replacing are: gearing system (cassete, chainring mech, shifters etc), brakes (rotors inc), suspension fork, wheels.

I have around £500-600 budget to buy all of the above parts was considering 120mm fork instead of 100mm but not sure if it would fit well.

I was thinking about buy the below but not sure whether it would be all compatible with each other:

Wheels - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mavi ... prod111508
Groupset - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod126348
Front Mech - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod119984
Fork - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/rock ... prod136309
Brakes - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/form ... prod120825

Any advice and suggestions are very welcome.

The groupset is a single ring system - so you won't need a front mech. Are you wanting a double or triple ring set up?

The brake rotors will not fit on the hubs, as the hubs are centelock.

To be honest you could by something like this for £500:

And just transfer the parts over. As long as the steerer length is long enough, it will all work and fit. And you will have a spare frame and other bits too.

It's pretty unusual to have actually worn all that out at once, I have many shifters and mechs and brakes a lot older than that that just need the odd bit of TLC, fixing little bits costs a lot less than replacing it wholesale.

I want a single ring system because I never change the front gear anyway.

Would these brakes fit with the wheels? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod124963

I know it may sound unbelievable but they really did wear out all by now, I am not really too experienced with fixing bikes or anything, the most I can do is change tubes and regulate the gears :P. I know there are tutorial websites on youtube etc, but I would have to find fitting parts and probably buy a wide range of tools?

You certainly don't need a front derailer then.

Those brakes would work fine, just remember to get the right adapters in the last step (the fork is PM mount, the frame is IS. You could use the old frame adapter).

So all the parts I've listed (minus the front derailleur) plus the new brakes would all be compatible in my bike?
Do you have a link where I could buy that adapter, I don't even know how it looks like :P

You buy the adaptor with the right frame/fork mount and for the size disc you have.

The only bit of a brake that wears out is the £4 pads, in what way are your brakes worn out?

Not trying to put you off buying new kit, on the other hand don't want you to needlessly replace perfectly good parts, for example we have three lots of 2006 brakes and one lot of 2004 in he family, all working perfectly, the bulk of my bike is circa 2006-10 parts.

I'm still confused with the adaptor part, is it like a completely separate item you buy or does it come will it come with the forks I want to buy?

The brake piston has popped out in the front brake so I no longer have front brake the rear pads are pretty much touching the rotor when the brake is loose.

The adapter is an option with the brake you linked to - you have to click what you want. It takes you through the process.

The new fork is post mount. The front brake is post mount. It will will bolt straight on the fork should you use a 160mm rotor, or you will need the PM to PM 180mm adapter for a 180mm rotor.

Your frame is IS. The brake is PM. You will need an adapter no matter what rotor size you choose, but IS to PM. You could, as mentioned before, use your old one IF it matches your rotor.

Hello, I've finally got the cash and time to upgrade the bike. Some of the parts I previously wanted to buy are not unavailable so I got these ones, not sure if everything will be compatible with each other, can you please let me know if it isn't and perhaps suggest an alternative. Thank you.

The front wheel won't fit the forks: 9mm drop outs on the forks but 15mm front hub.

The brake rotors won't fit on the wheels: 6-bolt rotors but centre lock hubs.

You have specced Trekking brakes. These are intended for touring / trekking and have long levers. Is that what you want?

I found this wheels as alternative, they should fit the fork I think, not sure about the rest.

No, I want normal mtb brakes (just like the standard ones in my bike).

    I've found these brakes
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/form ... prod120825
But there isn't an option for a PM to IS adapter. Would you know where I could buy one?

Read the description of the brakes: the rear is already IS, that should work

It says that, but as Formula don't produce an IS calliper, its BS, contradicted by the photo and the data below, the OP will need an IS to PM adaptor. Although the description may mean it comes with an adaptor, I'd check first.

This is all really confusing to me, like I've said I've never built a bike before or exchanged any parts.
In the Q&A it does say the brakes come with an adaptor for the rear.

So to finalize this entire set would be compatible with each other and my frame?

Thanks, I had to cancel the order because the brakes were unavailable. Swapped the Formula's for Avid DB3's and with the money saved from wheels I upgraded to Rockshox 30 gold tk forks, 100mm - 26"

If you are this uncertain about which parts and worried about making a mess of things have you thought of asking a friend with more experience or even visiting your local bike shop and see how much it would cost for them to buy and fit the parts you want changing...??
